Three nationally known physicians -- U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, mind-body pioneer Deepak Chopra and alternative-medicine advocate Wayne Jonas -- will speak to Charlotte audiences in coming weeks.
Satcher, who replaced President Clinton's initial surgeon general, Joycelyn Elders, will visit Charlotte in May to talk about adolescent health issues at the annual Carolinas Medical Center Spring Symposium.
Chopra, an endocrinologist, best-selling author and motivational speaker, will lead a half-day workshop on May 16 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Belk Theater in the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center uptown.
Chopra's seminar will provide up-to-date information about mind-body healing techniques designed to enhance health and well-being and to renew the power in your life. He also incorporates the principles of Ayurveda (aye-yur-VAY-da), an ancient Indian medical tradition that emphasizes preventing disease through nutrition, meditation, exercise, herbal supplements, aroma and music therapy, and regular daily and seasonal routines.
His many books include ``Ageless Body, Timeless Mind'' ($14; Random House).
Chopra's appearance is sponsored by Hopespring, a retreat center in South Carolina; Alternative Healthcare Options, a managed-care organization offering alternative-medicine options; and Creative Loafing, a weekly newspaper.
Tickets are $35 to $55 and will go on sale today. To order, call the Blumenthal box office, 372-1000, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Orchestra tickets only, for $45, are also available at Talley's Green Grocery, Infinity's Image, The Little Professor Book Center and The Healing Connection.
